"Songs of the Soul: Concert for Inner Peace"
Featuring the music of Sri Chinmoy performed by his students, and special guest artists Purushottama Boris Grebenshikov and Krishna Das.
About the concert
You are warmly invited to an evening of music dedicated to the profoundly beautiful and uplifting music of spiritual Master and composer Sri Chinmoy. Musicians from around the world will come together to offer their creative and inspirational musical arrangements as part of a week of cultural festivities.
This unique concert will feature the music of Sri Chinmoy performed by his students, as well as compositions by music legend and "Poet Laureate of Russia" Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov, and special guest and legendary Kirtan performer Krishna Das.
Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov hails from St Petersburg, Russia. In a career spanning over four decades, Grebenshikov has produced more than 50 albums. Often referred to as ‘Russia’s Bob Dylan’ his music has incorporated a range of styles, from folk and blues to translucent acoustics. In this concert he will offer some devotional Indian chants alongside his own compositions.
“Boris Purushottama has brought down heaven for us...He is all heart, all soul... a musician, singer of the highest order. He has brought infinite peace, infinite bliss for us.” Sri Chinmoy
In February 2006 Grebenshikov met Sri Chinmoy who offered him the name Purushottama, which relates to ‘the one who is beyond all limitations’. Grebenshikov believes that inside each human being resides an ‘infinite silence’ which is the source of creativity, and it is from this source that he continues to enchant audiences the world over. In September 2007 he performed as a special guest at Sri Chinmoy’s concert in St Petersburg.
Grebenshikov continues to tour Russia, Europe and North America regularly and pays annual visits to India. With his smoky tenor voice he is able to ‘express the inexpressible’ in a lyrical language that has earned him the affectionate title, “Poet Laureate of Russia.” When he performs to non-Russian speaking audiences he says, “There are things that are universal enough that they resonate with every person who listens.”
At this special evening, Grebenshikov will be joined by his good friend Krishna Das. Layering traditional kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga's "rock star." With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling western chant artist of all time.
Given the name Krishna Das when he was in India, he began to chant as part of following the path of Bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion. "The chanting just hits you and you want to be a part of it," Krishna Das promises. "That's the point of this whole thing. That's what cuts through all the 'stuff'. You get lit up. You don't have to know what it means."
In this concert, Grebenshikov and Krishna Das will endeavour to create a profound and significant experience of ‘Inner Peace’.
“A moment's truth
Can and shall make the world beautiful.
A moment's peace
Can and shall save the world.
A moment's love
Can and shall make the world perfect.”
